About

Also known as: Liam Shortall

Corto.alto is the project of Glasgow based multi instrumentalist Liam Shortall, and the name itself is a quiet joke: in Spanish, corto.alto translates roughly to short.tall, a nod to his surname Shortall. The debut album Bad With Names earned a Mercury Prize Album of the Year shortlist in 2024, which is no small thing for a jazz act. Shortall plays trombone, bass guitar and effects, and he pulls together a tight circle of collaborators, including drummer Graham Costello of STRATA, keys player Fergus McCreadie, and a rotating cast of horn players. The music sits firmly in the jazz world while carrying a distinctly Glasgow sensibility, and the Mercury recognition put corto.alto on a lot more radars than the typical jazz circuit tends to reach.
