Old 97's were right at the heart of the alt country explosion in the mid to late 1990s, helping shape a genre before pivoting toward a punchier power pop sound in the 2000s. The Dallas four piece built their reputation on relentless touring and a reputation as a ferocious live act, despite claiming they never rehearse. Lead singer and chief songwriter Rhett Miller calls their style "loud folk", and the band's name is a nod to the Wreck of the Old 97, a real train disaster. Their 2014 album Most Messed Up was their best selling record, hitting No. 30 on the Billboard 200. They also have an unlikely Marvel credit: the whole band portrayed the alien rock act Bzermikitokolok and the Knowheremen in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, performing original material alongside Kevin Bacon. Their most recent studio album is American Primitive, their thirteenth, and in 2025 they received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Music Honors and Awards.
