About
Otis Taylor spent nearly two decades out of music, working as an antique dealer after leaving the industry in 1977, then came back in 1995 with a sound all his own. He plays guitar, banjo, mandolin and harmonica, and his songs dig into the hard stuff: murder, racism, poverty and the hunt for redemption. Critics took notice fast. Down Beat named several of his albums Blues CD of the Year, including Truth Is Not Fiction, Double V and Definition of a Circle. The banjo became his mission. Recapturing the Banjo in 2008 was his attempt to reconnect listeners with the instrument's African roots, and it won him a Blues Music Award for his banjo playing the following year. His songs have ended up all over screens, from Public Enemies and Shooter to Justified and Luck. He also started the Trance Blues Festival in Boulder, and his later records include Hey Joe Opus/Red Meat and Banjo, released in 2023.
