Patrick Watson's 2010 song 'Je te laisserai des mots' crossed one billion streams on Spotify, making it the first French language track ever to hit that milestone. That kind of reach says a lot about the Montreal singer songwriter, whose band blends cabaret pop and classical textures with indie rock in a way that draws comparisons to Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake and Pink Floyd. His album Close to Paradise won the Polaris Music Prize in 2007, and the band has shared stages with everyone from James Brown to Philip Glass. The band is known for an adventurous approach to sound, once recording Watson playing a bicycle and having percussionist Robbie Kuster coax a tremolo effect out of a guitar using two spoons. Later albums like Adventures in Your Own Backyard and Love Songs for Robots pulled the sound toward something warmer and more song focused. His 2025 collaborative album Uh Oh features artists including Charlotte Cardin, Martha Wainwright and Klô Pelgag, and the song 'House on Fire' with Martha Wainwright landed on the shortlist for the 2026 SOCAN Polaris Song Prize.
