Patty Griffin writes songs that other artists can't stop covering. The Chicks, Emmylou Harris, Kelly Clarkson, Bette Midler, Martina McBride, and dozens more have recorded her work, and when Clarkson performed Griffin's "Up to the Mountain" on American Idol's "Idol Gives Back" episode, the live recording hit number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100, Griffin's highest charting moment as a songwriter. Her own discography covers a lot of ground. Her debut Living with Ghosts was a stripped back folk record born from demo tapes that A&M thought were too polished in their finished form. Flaming Red swung toward rock and roll, while Downtown Church, recorded in a Nashville Presbyterian church, won the Grammy for Best Traditional Gospel Album. Her 2019 self titled album then took the Grammy for Best Folk Album, and her record Crown of Roses earned a nomination in the same category for 2026.
