Few songwriting careers have matched the sheer breadth of what Paul McCartney has pulled off. He first made his mark as the bassist and co lead vocalist of the Beatles, trading songs with John Lennon in what became the most successful songwriting partnership in music history. Tracks like "Yesterday", "Eleanor Rigby" and "Blackbird" have been covered so many times they feel like folk standards, and his melodic approach to bass playing quietly redefined what the instrument could do in a band setting. After the Beatles split, McCartney formed Wings with his first wife Linda and Denny Laine, racking up a string of massive hits including "Band on the Run", "Silly Love Songs" and "Mull of Kintyre". He then resumed a solo career that produced further number ones alongside Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. With an estimated 100 million records sold and 32 Billboard Hot 100 chart toppers, he remains one of the best selling artists of all time.
