About
Paul Van Nevel has spent decades rescuing forgotten polyphonic music from library shelves and monastery archives, bringing composers like Johannes Ciconia and Nicolas Gombert back into the concert hall. In 1971 he founded the Huelgas Ensemble, named after the Codex Las Huelgas, a manuscript he tracked down at a Cistercian monastery near Burgos at the age of 24, armed with nothing but a letter of recommendation from the Belgian authorities. The ensemble started out as an instrumental group and gradually became a fully a cappella choir devoted to medieval and Renaissance repertoire. Van Nevel teaches at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and has worked as guest conductor with the Collegium Vocale Gent, the Netherlands Chamber Choir and the Netherlands Bach Society choir. His recordings with the Huelgas Ensemble have picked up plenty of recognition, including the Diapason d'Or in 1996 and the MIDEM Cannes Classical Award for best choral music in 1998. He is also known for his deep love of cigars, which even inspired a recording called The Art of the Cigar.
