About
Also known as: Paul Antony Young, Paull Youg
Paul Young built his reputation on a voice that sits perfectly in the blue eyed soul tradition, warm and silky but with genuine emotional pull. The Luton singer had already fronted Streetband and the much loved soul outfit Q Tips before going solo, and when his debut album No Parlez landed in 1983 it went straight to number one in the UK. His cover of the Marvin Gaye track "Wherever I Lay My Hat" spent three weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart, and the album eventually racked up 14 British Top 40 singles across his career. The peak of his commercial reach came with "Every Time You Go Away", a Hall and Oates cover that hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Best British Video at the 1986 Brit Awards, the year after he took home Best British Male. He also sang the opening lines of "Do They Know It's Christmas?", performed at Live Aid at Wembley in 1985, and appeared at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992 singing "Radio Ga Ga" alongside the surviving members of Queen. Since the mid 1990s he has kept busy playing with his Tex Mex outfit Los Pacaminos.
