About
Peaches built a whole career on being the loudest, filthiest and funniest voice in electroclash. Merrill Nisker started out in a folk trio and as a teacher, then reinvented herself with a Roland drum machine and a stage name borrowed from a Nina Simone scream. The Teaches of Peaches arrived in 2000 with "Fuck the Pain Away", still her signature song, and Sony dropped her after a video where her pubic and armpit hair grew to Rapunzel length. She kept going on her own terms. Fatherfucker (2003) featured Iggy Pop on "Kick It" and earned a GLAAD Media Award nomination, as did Impeach My Bush. Later came I Feel Cream, co produced with the likes of Simian Mobile Disco and Soulwax, plus a one woman Jesus Christ Superstar in Berlin with Chilly Gonzales on piano. She even turned up on a Christina Aguilera record. Variety has called her a feminist and queer icon, and it's hard to argue.
