About

Also known as: Pekka Taneli Kuusisto

Pekka Kuusisto is a Finnish violinist who defies easy categorisation. He plays a Stradivari from around 1695, yet is just as likely to be heard improvising with electronics as performing a Sibelius concerto. He was the first Finn to win the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in 1995, and has since built a career that stretches from directing major chamber orchestras to guesting with bands like Nightwish and The National. His curiosity keeps pulling him in unexpected directions. He composed the score for the animated series Moominvalley with Samuli Kosminen, gave the world premiere of Nico Muhly's concerto Shrink with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and has collaborated with accordionists, jugglers and folk musicians alike. He is also artistic director of Det Norske Kammerorkester, appointed in 2021, and has long been a champion of new music, premiering works by Sebastian Fagerlund and Olli Mustonen among others.
