Few artists have reinvented themselves as restlessly as Peter Gabriel. Starting out as the theatrical frontman of progressive rock group Genesis, he left in 1975 and carved out a solo career that went in directions few expected. His early solo records showed a darker, more experimental side, but it was his third album, known as Melt, that really set the template: a gated reverb drum sound that would reshape how rock records were made, politically charged tracks like the anti apartheid anthem Biko, and the No. 4 UK hit Games Without Frontiers. He also co created the WOMAD festival, bringing together traditional and contemporary music from across the world, and founded Real World, a studio and label dedicated to global artists. Songs like Solsbury Hill and In Your Eyes have become genuine classics, and his influence stretches well beyond any single genre.
