About

Also known as: Peter Shilling, Pierre Michael Schilling

Peter Schilling is the Stuttgart born synth pop artist who turned David Bowie's doomed astronaut into a global phenomenon. His 1983 track "Major Tom (Coming Home)" retells Bowie's "Space Oddity" and shot to number one in Canada, number fourteen in the US, and topped charts across Europe. Originally recorded in German as "Major Tom (Völlig losgelöst)", the song has proven remarkably durable, spawning multiple remixes across the decades and even a Huttese language version for the Star Wars series Skeleton Crew in 2024. Schilling's sci fi fixation runs deep. His debut album Error in the System and the side project Space Pilots, whose sole track "Trip to Orion" samples a classic German sci fi TV show, both orbit the same cosmic themes. More recently, he has lent his voice to a children's book series and radio plays built around the Major Tom character, in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center. His 2021 album Vis Viva shows he is still very much active.
