Peter and the Test Tube Babies have been winding up audiences and getting away with it since 1978, when Derek "Strangefish" Greening and Peter Bywaters formed the band in Peacehaven, Sussex. Their brand of punk rock leans heavily on absurdist humour and deliberately outrageous song titles, which earned them a spot in the so called Punk pathetique subgenre. Early exposure came through a John Peel session and a slot on the Brighton compilation Vaultage 78, and they went on to release a string of albums that kept the spirit firmly irreverent, from Pissed and Proud in 1982 through to Fuctifano in 2020. Over the decades they have shown up on multiple Oi! compilations and played festival stages across Europe. Vocalist Bywaters even managed to get himself deported from the US in 2017, a story that somehow fits perfectly with the band's chaotic reputation. Meanwhile Strangefish runs a punk rock radio show on Brighton's Radio Reverb, so the Brighton scene still has a direct line to the Test Tube Babies.
