PJ Harvey is the only artist to have won the Mercury Prize twice, taking it home for Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea in 2001 and again for Let England Shake in 2011. Born Polly Jean Harvey, she started out playing saxophone and guitar in Automatic Dlamini alongside her long term collaborator John Parish before forming her own trio in 1991. Those early records, Dry and Rid of Me, caught fire quickly enough that Rolling Stone named her Best New Artist and Best Singer Songwriter in 1992. What makes her career so compelling is how restless it has been. She has moved from the raw, blues soaked guitar noise of her debut through industrial textures on To Bring You My Love, spare piano arrangements on White Chalk, and the politically charged sound of Let England Shake, rarely visiting the same territory twice. She plays a wide range of instruments, has worked with producers and collaborators including Parish, Rob Ellis and Flood, and received a BAFTA, multiple Grammy and Brit nominations, and an MBE for services to music.
