Few bands made pop music sound as literary and lush as Prefab Sprout. Formed in Witton Gilbert by brothers Paddy and Martin McAloon, they built a reputation through the 1980s and 1990s for records that balanced melodic sophistication with genuinely strange, oblique lyrics. Paddy McAloon is widely regarded as one of the great songwriters of his generation, and albums like Steve McQueen and Jordan: The Comeback are frequently cited as some of the most beautifully crafted pop records of their era. Their biggest chart moment came with "The King of Rock 'n' Roll", a deadpan character study about a washed up 1950s novelty act whose signature hook goes "Hot dog, jumping frog, Albuquerque", and it hit number seven in the UK. From Langley Park to Memphis brought in Stevie Wonder and Pete Townshend as guests, while nine of their albums reached the UK top 40. Since 2003, Prefab Sprout has effectively been McAloon's solo vehicle, though the name carries all the weight of that remarkable back catalogue.
