Few bands have reinvented themselves as radically as Primal Scream. The Glasgow outfit started out in 1982 with Bobby Gillespie and Jim Beattie making what Gillespie called "elemental noise tapes", and by the mid 1980s they were a fixture of the jangle pop scene via their early Creation Records singles. But the pivot that really mattered came when they fell into the acid house world and teamed up with DJ Andrew Weatherall, which led to 1991's Screamadelica, a record that blended rock, rave, gospel and soul in a way that felt genuinely new and pushed them into the mainstream. They didn't stop there: subsequent albums took detours through blues, trip hop and industrial rock, making their catalogue one of the more restless and unpredictable in British rock. Their most recent album, Come Ahead, arrived in November 2024.
