Few bands captured the texture of British working class life quite like Pulp. Fronted by the lanky, bespectacled Jarvis Cocker, the Sheffield group built their reputation on sharp, voyeuristic lyrics that turned mundane domestic detail into something electric. After grinding away for most of the 1980s without much to show for it, they finally broke through in the mid 1990s with His 'n' Hers, then followed it up with Different Class, which hit number one in the UK and gave the world "Common People", one of the defining songs of the Britpop era. At their peak Pulp were considered part of Britpop's "big four" alongside Blur, Oasis and Suede, headlining Glastonbury twice and selling over ten million records. Their 1998 album This Is Hardcore swapped the euphoria for something darker and more unsettling, and it also debuted at number one. After a decade off, they reunited in 2011, then again in 2022, and in June 2025 released their eighth album More, which went straight to number one and earned universal acclaim.
