About
Pungent Stench built a reputation in Vienna's death metal scene by swapping the usual zombie and gore routine for sexual deviance, black comedy and album covers featuring shocking photos by Joel Peter Witkin. Their lyrics stayed well on the off putting side, and some argue they helped inspire the pornogrind subgenre. Musically they ran on a blend of death metal and grindcore, but they also let rock and blues slip in, which is why songs like "Viva la Muerte" sound a bit different from the pack. Martin Schirenc plays a Fender Telecaster, a rare choice in metal. They signed to Nuclear Blast in 1989 after the label sent someone to watch them play. Their 1990 debut, For God Your Soul... For Me Your Flesh, was raw and primitive, and its title track landed on a "100 Best Death Metal Songs" list from German Metal Hammer. They split, reformed, and eventually released a final studio album, Smut Kingdom, in 2018, recorded back in 2007.
