Rachael Yamagata has a knack for making piano rock feel genuinely raw. The Arlington, Virginia native first cut her teeth with the Chicago band Bumpus, spending six years on the road before striking out solo and signing with Arista's Private Music in 2002. Her debut full length Happenstance landed in 2004, and her follow up Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart earned a reputation for being considerably darker, which Billboard noted at the time. She has lent her voice to a remarkable range of collaborators, from Ryan Adams and Bright Eyes to Toots and the Maytals, whose Grammy winning album True Love featured her alongside Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Bonnie Raitt. Her fourth studio album Tightrope Walker came out in 2016, again through PledgeMusic, and she has kept releasing music since. Her songs have shown up across film and television, and her guest vocal appearances span everything from Jason Mraz to a Muppets cover album. As recently as 2025, she has been putting out new material, including the lyric video for the song Birds.
