Ottawa cellist Raphael Weinroth Browne has carved out a genuinely unusual corner of the music world, bringing the cello into heavy and progressive territory that most classical players would never touch. He has contributed to recordings by the likes of Woods of Ypres and Fates Warning, but his solo work is where things get especially interesting. His YouTube channel offers cello arrangements of Meshuggah, Lamb of God, Opeth and Steven Wilson, which says a lot about where his head is at musically. Spanning classical crossover, modern classical, progressive rock and progressive metal, his sound refuses to sit still in any one genre. In 2025 he put out "Speed of Light," suggesting he is still pushing things forward and has no interest in standing still.
