Ray Wylie Hubbard is probably best known for writing "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother," the song Jerry Jeff Walker made famous in 1973 and that has been covered endlessly since. That early success got Hubbard signed to Warner Bros., though his debut with the Cowboy Twinkies ended in frustration when producer Michael Brovsky quietly overdubbed the recordings with backup singers and a slicker sound without his knowledge. Hubbard hated it, tried to block the release, and lost. He spent much of the following decade grinding through labels and modest sales with his blend of country, folk and blues before stepping away from music in the mid 1980s. His return in the early 1990s was the real beginning of a steady second act. He has been recording prolifically ever since, and his 2017 album Tell the Devil I'm Getting There as Fast as I Can showed him leaning hard into rock and roll territory. With two collaborative records on Big Machine in 2020 and 2022, he keeps finding new ways to stretch his outlaw country reputation.
