Regina Spektor

About

Also known as: Regina Ilyinichna Spektor, Regina Spector, Реги́на Ильи́нична Спе́ктор, Реги́на Спе́ктор, レジーナ・スペクター, 蕾吉娜·史派克特

Regina Spektor built her following the hard way, playing New York City's anti folk scene at places like the East Village's SideWalk Cafe before landing a deal with Sire Records in 2004. Her piano driven songs sit somewhere between chamber pop, indie rock, and art pop, with lyrics that lean more toward invented characters and literary references than personal diary entries. The breakthrough came with Begin to Hope in 2006, lifted by the single "Fidelity", and her next two albums Far and What We Saw from the Cheap Seats both debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200. She has a knack for turning up in unexpected places: she opened for the Strokes on their Room on Fire tour, even recording "Modern Girls and Old Fashion Men" with them, and later wrote "You've Got Time" as the theme for Orange Is the New Black. New York City officially named June 11, 2019, Regina Spektor Day, and she was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame the same year.
