About
Also known as: Richard Willis Hawley, Wayne Marsden
Sheffield runs through Richard Hawley's work like a watermark. Named after local landmarks and steeped in the city's atmosphere, his albums built a sound that draws on 1950s pop shimmer, baroque orchestration, and a warm, unhurried melancholy that is entirely his own. Before going solo he put in time with Britpop act Longpigs and then as a touring guitarist with Pulp alongside his friend Jarvis Cocker, quietly developing the songwriting instincts that would later define his career. His breakthrough came with Coles Corner in 2005, named after a Sheffield meeting spot for lovers, which earned him a Mercury Prize nomination. Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner memorably declared at the ceremony that Hawley had been robbed. Over ten studio albums he has also lent his talents to sessions with Robbie Williams, Nancy Sinatra, Gwen Stefani, Paul Weller, Duane Eddy and Manic Street Preachers, and picked up two Mercury nominations and a Brit Award nod along the way.
