About
Ride were one of the bands that helped define shoegaze, even though they never liked the label. Andy Bell has said his first reaction to the tag was that it was just another boring one. The Oxford four piece signed to Creation Records after a demo tape made its way to Alan McGee, and they kept the pressure on by releasing three EPs in 1990 alone, all of which cracked the UK top 75. Their debut Nowhere and its follow up Going Blank Again are regularly named among the best shoegaze albums ever, and "Leave Them All Behind" gave them a top 10 single. The story took a few turns after that. Carnival of Light arrived in the thick of Britpop and pushed the sound in a different direction, and the band split in 1996 before Tarantula came out. Bell went on to play bass in Oasis. Ride got back together in 2014 and have since made Weather Diaries, This Is Not a Safe Place and Interplay.
