Rina Sawayama moves between genres the way most artists stick to one, blending nu metal, early 2000s R&B, electropop and pop rock into something that feels genuinely her own. Her 2020 debut album Sawayama, released through Dirty Hit and produced largely by Clarence Clarity, landed to widespread critical acclaim and sparked a real conversation when Sawayama went public about being ineligible for the Mercury Prize and Brit Awards due to her lack of British citizenship. The hashtag "SawayamaIsBritish" trended in the UK, with Elton John among those backing her publicly. Before all that, she built her following the hard way, self funding her 2017 debut EP Rina after two to three years of saving, with Pitchfork ranking it among the best pop and R&B releases of that year. Her second album Hold the Girl arrived in 2022, and she has since crossed into acting, playing Akira in John Wick: Chapter 4. Singles like "STFU!", "XS" and "Comme des Garçons (Like the Boys)" show exactly why her range keeps drawing people in.
