Rob Thomas is probably best known for "Smooth", his guest spot on Santana's 1999 smash that sat at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 straight weeks and was later named the second most successful song in the chart's entire history. That one collaboration won three Grammy Awards, but it barely scratches the surface of what he has been up to. He is the lead singer and primary songwriter for Matchbox Twenty, the Florida rock band behind a run of hits including "Push", "3AM", "Unwell" and "Bent". As a solo artist his debut album Something to Be went straight to number one on the Billboard 200, led by the single "Lonely No More". Outside his own projects, he has written songs for artists ranging from Willie Nelson and Mick Jagger to Taylor Hicks and Daughtry, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame recognised that breadth early on with its Hal David Starlight Award in 2004.
