Roxy Music spent most of the 1970s doing something no one else quite managed: blending the glittery swagger of glam rock with genuine musical sophistication, art school ideas, and a knack for visual drama. Formed in 1970 by Bryan Ferry and Graham Simpson, the band found its most distinctive sound when Ferry's crooning theatrics collided with Brian Eno's synthesizer experiments and Andy Mackay's saxophone lines. Eno left after the second album, but the band kept evolving, moving from art rock weirdness toward sleeker, more polished territory. Their 1982 record Avalon turned out to be the commercial peak, going Platinum in the US despite the band being a cult act there for a decade. They broke up in 1983, reunited in 2001, and have toured on and off since, celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2022. In 2019 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognition that their influence on punk, new wave and electronic music had never really faded.
