Ruston Kelly writes the kind of alt country and Americana that sounds like it was pulled from somewhere genuinely dark. His 2018 debut album Dying Star, released on Rounder Records, drew strong reviews and set the tone for a career built on raw, confessional songwriting. Before that, his song "Nashville Without You" landed on Tim McGraw's album Two Lanes of Freedom after Kelly signed with BMG Nashville in 2013, and his debut EP Halloween, produced by Mike Mogis, came out in 2017. He followed Dying Star with Shape & Destroy in 2020 and then The Weakness in 2023, the latter also yielding a single that charted on Adult Alternative Airplay. His EP series Dirt Emo shows a willingness to push outside the boundaries of traditional Americana, and with Pale, Through the Window arriving in 2025 alongside Dirt Emo Vol. 2, Kelly has kept a steady and restless creative pace going.
