About
Also known as: Ryan Otto Cassata
Ryan Cassata made history as the first openly transgender musician to perform at Vans Warped Tour, doing it not once but twice after winning the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands in 2013 and 2015. Based out of Stony Brook, he works in folk rock and queercore, using his songs to tackle social justice head on. Tracks like "Soda Cans" earned a spot on The Advocate's list of trans anthems, and "We're The Cool Kids" landed him on Billboard's roundup of transgender and non binary musicians to know. His documentary "Songs for Alexis," a Danish production that premiered at Hot Docs to a sold out crowd, brought his story to a wider audience. He has played venues from Jazz at Lincoln Center to the Whisky a Go Go, and his reach goes well beyond the stage, with speaking engagements at Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, and dozens of other universities.
