Saint Etienne started out as a side project of two former music journalists who planned to rotate lead singers, then met Sarah Cracknell and made her the permanent voice. What followed was a career built on blending club culture with 1960s pop, from the indie dance of debut Foxbase Alpha, with its hits "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and "Nothing Can Stop Us", to 1995's "He's on the Phone", their highest charting single. They have never stood still. Tiger Bay went folk and electronica, Good Humor was recorded on entirely analogue gear in Sweden, and Sound of Water turned ambient with To Rococo Rot in Berlin. Later records circle back to London, British cinema and pop culture. I've Been Trying to Tell You used vaporwave inspired samples and became their biggest album since 1994, and The Night pushed into beatless atmospherics. Their 2025 album International is said to be their last studio record.
