Santigold built her reputation on refusing to stay in one lane. Her 2008 debut album, released under the name Santogold, blended dub, new wave, hip hop and alternative rock into something critics at Rolling Stone, Spin and Entertainment Weekly all fell for hard. The single 'L.E.S. Artistes' hit the top 40 in the UK, and the album landed sixth on Rolling Stone's year end list. She changed the name to Santigold in 2009 to sidestep a potential lawsuit from a filmmaker. Her second album, Master of My Make Believe (2012), peaked at number 21 on the Billboard 200 and produced 'Disparate Youth', a song that turned up in a Honda Civic ad and on insurance campaigns. Her third album 99¢ followed in 2016, then a mixtape in 2018, and her fourth album Spirituals in 2022, which The Guardian called a whirlwind album full of feeling and fervour. Along the way she has collaborated with Jay Z, Kanye West, Beastie Boys, Karen O, Mark Ronson, Diplo and Tyler, the Creator, among others.
