About

Scott Kelly spent over three decades as the voice and guitarist of Neurosis, the California band that helped define post metal and sludge metal by fusing hardcore punk brutality with sprawling, almost cinematic heaviness. Beyond Neurosis, he kept a busy parallel career: three solo albums drawing on folk and country influences, guest vocals on every Mastodon studio album from Leviathan through Emperor of Sand, and membership in supergroups like Shrinebuilder alongside Al Cisneros and Dale Crover, and Corrections House with Zola Jesus collaborator Sanford Parker. His musical palette pulled from genuinely unexpected places, with Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt, and Hank Williams sitting alongside Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, and Swans as key touchstones. That range showed up in his solo work especially, which leaned into sparse, raw acoustics far from Neurosis's walls of sound. Kelly was fired from Neurosis in 2019 after the band learned he had been abusing his wife and children, a fact kept private at the family's request until 2022, when Kelly publicly admitted to the abuse and announced his retirement from music.
