About
Secret Chiefs 3 is really seven bands wearing one name. Led by guitarist and composer Trey Spruance, also of Mr. Bungle and formerly Faith No More, the project spans surf rock, Persian and Indian music, death metal, film scores and electronic sound collages, mostly without vocals. Spruance has said the group is a banner for seven satellite bands, among them Electromagnetic Azoth, Ishraqiyun, Traditionalists and Holy Vehm, each tied to a different strand of his musical and philosophical interests. The name comes from the "Secret Chiefs" said to guide esoteric and mystical groups over the last two centuries, and Spruance has drawn on Sufism, Kabbalah, Hermeticism and alchemy. Book of Horizons (2004) and Satellite Supersonic Vol. 1 (2010) work like compilations of the satellite bands. The lineup keeps shifting, with players such as Eyvind Kang, Trevor Dunn, Ches Smith and Shahzad Ismaily passing through, so "current member" barely applies.
