About
Also known as: Havva Selda Bağcan, סלדה באג'אן
Selda Bağcan has been one of Turkey's most uncompromising voices since the early 1970s, mixing Anatolian folk with rock, psychedelia, and electronic sounds in a way that felt genuinely radical at the time. Her six debut singles in 1971, built around her guitar or bağlama and a raw, emotionally charged vocal style, made her famous almost overnight. What set her apart wasn't just the music but the politics baked into it: songs about injustice, poverty, and the working class that made her a figurehead for the Turkish left and a target for the military government after the 1980 coup. She was imprisoned three times in the early 1980s and her passport was confiscated until 1987, which kept her off international stages for years. When the passport came back she was straight on a European tour, and her profile outside Turkey has only grown since. Her music has been sampled by Mos Def, Dr. Dre, and 2manydjs, and artists like Florence Welch and St. Vincent name her as an influence. She headlined Le Guess Who? Festival in Utrecht in 2014 alongside acts who openly credit her, and she runs her own music production company, Majör Müzik Yapım, in Istanbul.
