About
Also known as: Tankian
Most people know Serj Tankian as the voice behind System of a Down, the heavy metal band he has fronted since 1994, but his output stretches well beyond that. Alongside five albums with the band, including Toxicity and the number one debuts Mezmerize and Hypnotize, he has built a solo discography that ranges from the orchestral Elect the Dead Symphony, recorded with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, to the more recent Elasticity. His vocal range, measured at 4.2 octaves, is a big part of what makes him stand out, and Hit Parader ranked him among the top 30 heavy metal vocalists in 2006. Outside the studio, Tankian co founded Axis of Justice with guitarist Tom Morello in 2002, a non profit focused on political activism. He has been a consistent advocate for recognition of the Armenian genocide, work that earned him the Armenian Prime Minister's Medal in 2011. He also runs his own imprint, Serjical Strike Records, and has collaborated with artists as varied as rapper Tech N9ne and folk singer Arto Tunçboyacıyan.
