Seven Mary Three rode the post grunge wave of the mid 90s hard enough to go platinum, largely on the back of "Cumbersome", a grungey, Pearl Jam adjacent single that cracked the Top 40 and became the defining moment of their career. The band formed out of Virginia's College of William and Mary and named themselves after a CHiPs character's police radio call sign, which tells you a lot about their no nonsense, low pretension approach. Their 1995 major label debut American Standard hit platinum just seven months after release, with "Water's Edge" adding further traction on rock radio. What followed was a cycle of label shuffles and shifting sounds, from the acoustic folk detour of RockCrown to the harder edged Economy of Sound in 2001, which contributed a track to the Crazy/Beautiful soundtrack. The band quietly dissolved in 2012 with no announcement, but resurfaced nearly a decade later. In 2023 they put out "Settle Up" alongside a reissue of their 2004 album Dis/Location, a sign that Seven Mary Three still have unfinished business.
