René Pawlowitz has been quietly one of the most prolific figures in German techno for decades, releasing music as Shed from his Berlin base while juggling a whole roster of aliases that span wildly different sounds. His debut album Shedding the Past earned album of the year from Resident Advisor in 2008, a recognition that put him firmly on the map. As Shed he trades in minimal techno with serious weight behind it, but flip to his Head High alias and you get house, or to Hoover1 for breakbeat hardcore and jungle. The WAX series runs all the way into double digits, each release numbered in sequence, and his EQD and Evil Fred projects cover yet more ground. It is a body of work that resists easy categorisation but consistently rewards the listener.
