Shed Seven built their reputation on jangly, hook driven guitar rock out of York, and for a while in the mid 1990s they were genuinely one of the biggest guitar bands in Britain. Their seventh single, Going For Gold, peaked at number 8 and remains their highest charting hit, and in 1996 they scored more top 40 singles than any other act in the UK. Early press drew comparisons to The Smiths, though the band's sound was brashier and more direct than that suggests. Three studio albums, Change Giver, A Maximum High and Let It Ride, defined their classic run before a breakup in 2003. They reformed in 2007 and kept plugging away, eventually releasing Instant Pleasures in 2017. Then things got properly interesting again: their 2024 album A Matter of Time became their first ever number one on the UK Albums Chart, and later that same year Liquid Gold went straight in at number one too, giving them two chart toppers in a single year. Not bad for a band some had written off.
