About
Also known as: Sheena Shirley Orr, シーナ・イーストン
Sheena Easton holds a record no other artist in Billboard history can claim: top five hits across every primary singles chart the magazine tracks. That alone tells you something about the sheer range she brought to the 1980s. Starting out as the subject of a BBC documentary about breaking into pop, she turned the cameras following her around into a launchpad, scoring a UK hit with "Modern Girl" and then a US number one with "9 to 5" before anyone really knew what to make of her. The James Bond theme "For Your Eyes Only" followed, and she picked up the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1982. Her fifth album, A Private Heaven, marked a deliberate reinvention toward a bolder, sexier sound. "Strut" went top ten in multiple countries, and "Sugar Walls", a Prince composition released under his pseudonym Alexander Nevermind, stirred genuine controversy. She also crossed into country with Kenny Rogers, picked up a second Grammy for a Spanish language duet with Luis Miguel, and scored again in 1988 with "The Lover in Me" hitting number two on the Hot 100. The New York Times called her an "80s pop phenomenon", and that reads about right.
