About
Shiki Percussion Duo takes orchestral and chamber music from the early twentieth century and reworks it for mallet instruments, specifically marimba and vibraphone. The pair, Ayami Okamura and Daniel deSimone, dig into repertoire that was originally written for piano, voice, koto or full orchestra, then arrange it for their two person setup. The composers they draw from include Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky, so the sonic world they inhabit sits somewhere between impressionism and early modernism, rendered through the warm resonance of struck keys rather than strings or wind.
