About
Gwilym Simcock is a Welsh pianist and composer who moves fluently between jazz and classical music, and that crossover quality defines pretty much everything he does. His 2011 album Good Days At Schloss Elmau landed him a Mercury Music Prize nomination, putting him in the same conversation as PJ Harvey that year. He was the first jazz musician picked for the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme, which led to a Wigmore Hall trio performance during the London Jazz Festival and a commission to write and perform his piano concerto Progressions with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Proms in 2008, broadcast live on BBC Two. Simcock plays in a lot of company worth noting. He toured with Pat Metheny in a quartet alongside Linda Oh and Antonio Sanchez, was a founding member of The Impossible Gentlemen, and has recorded and performed with Bill Bruford's Earthworks, Tim Garland's Lighthouse Trio, and many others. Chick Corea personally selected him for a solo concert and live recording at Klavier Festival Ruhr 2007, which says something about how he is regarded by peers.
