About
Skating Polly started as a two piece in Oklahoma City, founded by step siblings Kelli Drew Mayo and Peyton Mckenna Bighorse, who were just 9 and 14 years old when they played their first show at a family Halloween party. What makes them tick is the constant instrument swapping, with both members trading off guitar, bass, drums, and piano, plus alternating lead vocals in a way that keeps their sound hard to pin down. They move easily between riot grrrl, grunge, and piano driven indie pop, and their live shows have a reputation for being genuinely intense. Exene Cervenka of X championed them early on and produced their second album, Lost Wonderfuls, which came out in 2013 with help from Flaming Lips drummer Kliph Scurlock on mixing duties. Their third record, Fuzz Steilacoom, was recorded with K Records founder Calvin Johnson in Olympia and pushed their sound into rawer, louder territory. Kelli's brother Kurtis Lee Mayo joined on drums in 2017, freeing the sisters to focus on guitar and bass.
