Few bands define the shoegaze sound quite like Slowdive. Formed in Reading in 1989 around Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell, they built their reputation on washes of distorted guitar, layered vocals and an almost weightless dreaminess that put them at the centre of the early 90s UK shoegaze scene. Debut album Just for a Day and its follow up Souvlaki arrived in quick succession, but the British press had already turned on shoegaze by then, and the band dissolved after 1995's Pygmalion. After nearly two decades away, Slowdive reunited in 2014 and proved the world had caught up with them. Their 2017 self titled comeback record landed to widespread acclaim, and Everything Is Alive in 2023 became their first top ten album in multiple countries including the UK, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. It was a vindication that few comebacks manage to pull off.
