Stavanger's Slutface, who later renamed themselves Sløtface for social media reasons while keeping the original pronunciation, built their reputation on sharp, feminist indie pop punk with a side of genuine political backbone. Their 2016 single "Sponge State" is a perfect example: the band hauled their gear up a Norwegian mountain after an eleven hour drive and four ferries to play a show for activists chained to a fjord in protest against a mining company dumping chemical waste. That kind of commitment runs through everything they do. Musically, they grew steadily through a run of EPs before landing their debut album Try Not to Freak Out in 2017, followed by Sorry for the Late Reply in 2020 to positive reviews. Their single "Empire Records" picked up serious attention for its nods to beloved 1990s cult films. In 2022, two founding members departed, leaving the band's next chapter open.
