About
Also known as: Smokey, Смоуки
Few bands from Bradford have left a mark quite like Smokie. After years grinding through name changes and failed record deals, they finally clicked when producers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman brought them into the same orbit as Sweet, Mud, and Suzi Quatro. The results were some of the most infectious soft rock of the 1970s. A threatened lawsuit from Smokey Robinson forced the spelling change, but it hardly slowed them down. Their biggest moment came with "Living Next Door to Alice", which hit No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and reached No. 1 in Australia. Other singles like "If You Think You Know How to Love Me", "I'll Meet You at Midnight", and "Lay Back in the Arms of Someone" kept them a fixture on the charts across Europe. The band has weathered countless lineup changes over the decades and was still out on the road as recently as 2024.
