About
Son Rompe Pera are from Naucalpan, just outside Mexico City, and they play a version of cumbia unlike anything else out there. The secret weapon is the marimba, a traditional Mexican folk instrument that the founding Gama brothers, Jesús and Allan, grew up playing in the streets and at weddings. They weave that earthy, percussive sound together with danzón, ska, rock, and punk influences drawn from bands as different as The Clash and Mi Banda El Mexicano. Their debut album Batuco landed to critical praise, and they have been building serious momentum since. In 2022 they recorded a Tiny Desk Concert session at the historic Salón Los Ángeles and hit the main stage of Vive Latino. They followed that up with a performance at Coachella in 2024. Their second album Chimborazo came out in 2023, showing the band has no intention of standing still.
