About
Sonido Gallo Negro is an instrumental band from the east side of Mexico City that takes 1960s Peruvian cumbia and pushes it somewhere stranger. Guitars sit alongside eccentric organs, analog synthesizers and a theremin, and the whole thing is soaked in a psychedelic, almost esoteric atmosphere that's built to keep you dancing until you drop. Spaghetti western soundtracks and surf music leak into their compositions too, which gives the cumbia a dusty, cinematic edge. Live, the band plays with hypnotic visuals provided by Dr. Alderete. They have four studio albums and a live album behind them, plus a handful of notable collaborations, and they're regarded as one of the leading names in their genre in Mexico City.
