About
Los Mirlos, whose name means "the Blackbirds", are one of the great names in Peruvian jungle cumbia. The founders brought their sound from Moyobamba in the Peruvian Amazon to Lima in 1972, and Infopesa signed them the very next year. They went on to put out nine albums and two compilations with that label. The music mixes cumbia with psychedelic and surf rock, with groups like Los Destellos and Los Chamas cited as key influences. Some people just call it psychedelic cumbia, and they always made a point of celebrating their roots in the jungle. Their records were also huge in Mexico, thanks to 1970s and 80s releases on Discos InterGas. A planned Mexican tour in 2017 got postponed after the Mexico City earthquake. Their story reached the screen too, with the documentary Mirlo's Dance premiering at the Lima Film Festival in 2022. More recently, a collaboration with Guaynaa called "Prieta de mi Vida" showed up on YouTube.
