About
Also known as: Sun Volt
Son Volt rose out of the wreckage of Uncle Tupelo, the alt country act that split when tensions between Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy boiled over. Tweedy went off to start Wilco, and Farrar built Son Volt, whose 1995 debut Trace landed on plenty of best of lists. Windfall became an alt country favourite, and Drown cracked the mainstream rock chart top ten. Since then the band has shifted shape a lot, with Farrar as the one constant. Its sound moves between quiet folk ballads and heavier, Neil Young style heartland rock, always rooted in Americana. There was a hiatus in the early 2000s, then a reformed line up and a protest flavoured folk rock record, Okemah and the Melody of Riot. Later came the Bakersfield Sound tinged Honky Tonk, Union with its sharp political commentary, and Electro Melodier in 2021.
