Sonne Hagal started out in the early 1990s punk and experimental pop scene of Rathenow, Brandenburg, but by 2000 they had found their real footing with the 10" album Sinnreger. That record marked a decisive shift into dark wave and neofolk territory, weaving in a German folk song, a poem by expressionist poet Else Lasker Schüler, and a track rooted in an agitation song by Rosa Luxemburg. Subsequent releases dug deeper into runes, Eddic poetry and nature lyricism, with collaborations featuring Andreas Ritter of Forseti and Kim Larsen of Of the Wand and the Moon. The 2005 single Dygel brought Ian Read and Matt Howden into the fold. The band members stay anonymous, and the name itself says a lot: sonne is German for sun and hagal is a rune, reflecting their ongoing fascination with Northern European mysticism and the idea that ancient philosophy still has something real to teach.
